“Yes, there are great veterinary software programs available, however it is often rendered ineffective when applied to the unique and specific needs of the small mobile veterinary practice, especially when the practice is focused on hospice and EOL care.”
Founders Dennis and Dr. Sara Hopkins have a passion for helping not only pets and pet parents, but those veterinarians in the mobile EOL community that struggle with feelings of stress, financial concerns, and the lack of know-how to evolve their practice. They are happy to share what they have learned, as running an EOL care practice is extremely rewarding and a worthy goal.
The people behind REX
Dennis Hopkins: REX founder
I was born and raised in Toronto, Canada. For as long as I can remember, I’ve had a passion to create and solve problems…. especially solve problems that make peoples lives better.
After I obtained an Honors Degree in Philosophy from the University of Western Ontario I moved to Vancouver, British Columbia where I continued my education, this time with a focus on business and entrepreneurship.
In 1999 I settled in Seattle, where I now live with my wife Sara, our young son, our cats Tallulah and Sushi and our dogs Roy and Tilley.
When I’m not “playing with REX”, I enjoy camping with the family, canoeing, kayaking and fine woodworking. Yoga and meditation are important parts of my life as well.
Dr. Sara Hopkins: REX founder
I was raised in Toronto, Canada and moved with my family to the United States in 1991. I’m happy to call Washington State my home, where I’ve lived since 1996.
For years I knew that I wanted to work with animals. I completed my veterinary education at Washington State University in 2000, and more recently, veterinary acupuncture through the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society (IVAS).
I practiced at an Eastside small animal clinic for 11 years. I loved my work there, particularly my patients and their families. In the later years, I developed an interest in pain management and a passion for giving pets the dignified and loving end-of-life journey they deserved. In 2013, I felt the need to combine my acupuncture training with my love for compassionate care of animals in a home-based setting, and founded Compassion 4 Paws.
I’m so glad I did. I find nothing more fulfilling than offering pets the care and dignity they deserve in an environment where they’re completely comfortable.
In the fall of 2017, I became one of the first veterinarians to achieve certification in Animal Hospice and Palliative Care through the IAAHPC (International Association of Animal Hospice and Palliative Care). The 16 month course furthered my knowledge to better support pets and their families during their end-of-life journey.
